Blue Dasher

In July, an outing that Erika and I enjoyed was the Minnesota Water Garden Society's annual water feature tour across the greater Minneapolis/St. Paul area.  My new interest in stalking dragonflies added to the good time.  I photographed these Blue Dashers in Dakota County of 30 July 2011.
Look for Blue Dashers almost anywhere with still water. The larvae are highly tolerant of poor water quality and low oxygen levels (Buggide.net). Indeed, many biologists use the presence of Blue Dashers as an indicator of poor water quality.  This species is found from southern British Columbia east to Ontario, extending south through the U.S. from southern California east to Florida. The top photo is a male, the lower, a female.
