A Red-breasted Merganser fed at Woodard Bay northeast of Olympia on 4 January 2022. This species is among our favorite ducks, not only because of its perpetual bad hair day, but also because it appears to “snorkel” for its food. In shallow water, mergansers swim with their eyes beneath the water surface. They then dive after their prey.
