Perhaps the most striking hummingbird we saw on 5 July near Monteverde was the Purple-throated Mountain-gem. This species inhabits mountain cloud forests from Nicaragua to Panama. As you can see in these photos, males (upper image taken by Erika) look quite different than the ochre-breasted females. Unlike many tropical birds, this hummingbird usually breeds in the rainy season (
Cornell).
