I photographed this Woodland Skipper in our yard on 31 July 2020. Skippers all look the same to me, so I submitted this image to
Butterflies and Moths, which verified my initial and very tentative identification. Woodland Skippers are common and widespread from southwestern Canada south to southern California and east to western North Dakota, Colorado, and Arizona. Although often the most common orange skipper in its range, especially from mid-summer through fall, this is my first encounter with one.
